October 5, 2020, Greenville, SC - Greenville Federal Credit Union announced today it is sponsoring “shopGVL”, a two-week sweepstakes taking place during October. The giveaway is part of a larger initiative in partnership with the City of Greenville and GVLToday, to encourage the public to get out and support local retailers that have suffered slow or limited business during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hosted by GVLToday, the shopGVL Sweepstakes will award three lucky shoppers each a $1,000 credit to their favorite local store, plus their favorite store will win $1,000 cash, all courtesy of Greenville Federal Credit Union.

The significant shift in shopping from in-person to online during the COVID-19 pandemic has left many small retailers struggling as business remains slow. The shopGVL giveaway provides a fun and supportive incentive for the community to venture back out to their favorite retailers.

“No one wants to see local retailers shutting their doors because there just isn’t enough traffic to sustain business during this pandemic,” said Paul Hughes, CEO of Greenville Federal Credit Union.  “This initiative encourages the community to bring their business back into the local stores – those small businesses run by our neighbors and friends. Every dollar spent in a locally owned business goes back into our community. Shopping local is one of the best ways we can support these businesses and contribute to the financial wellness of our community.”

The #shopGVL Sweepstakes began on Monday, Oct. 5, and will be hosted by GVLToday. Anyone living in Greenville (including local shop owners) can enter to win an unlimited amount of times. Entries close Friday, Oct. 16 at 9 a.m. Three winners (and their three favorite stores) will be chosen at random and announced in the GVLToday newsletter on Monday, Oct. 19.

“Since 1968 our credit union has been committed to serving individuals and businesses across Greenville County,” continued Hughes. “We hope this giveaway will help kick-off a strong holiday shopping season for our local retailers and contribute to a healthy economic recovery as we head into the new year.”
